NATURE'S ANSWER FEMALE COMPLEX 90 VEG CAPS Promotes Female Hormonal Balance Dong Quai's principle use has been for female problems, especially for ailments afflicting the female organs and the smooth muscles of the uterus. Dong Quai helps to maintain a proper balance of female hormones. For men, Dong Quai can enhance the use of Vitamin E, which may be an explanation of its prevention of testicular disease. Dong Quai has been reported to have antibiotic effects on several bacteria including E. coli, streptococcus and shigella. Dong Quai is a bowel lubricant, thus helping to overcome constipation. Dong Quai, referred to as the 'female ginseng', is rich in vitamins and minerals and is one of the most widely used herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. It is effective for female disorders such as menstrual disturbances, PMS and hot flashes due to its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiseptic, bactericidal and vasodilative effects. The herb is also used to regulate menstrual cycles, relieve menstrual cramps and alleviate symptoms related to PMS. 'Herbal Tonic Therapies,' Daniel B. Mowrey, Ph.D: 'Next to Panax ginseng, the root of dong quai is undoubtedly the most honored and respected herb in China, and is quickly gaining an equal reputation among users in the rest of the world.. Dong quai is used medicinally as a tonic, cardiotonic, respiratory tonic and liver tonic. It is used to promote circulation, to regulate the menstrual cycle and stop discomforts of menstruation. That means it's good for PMS. In Western herbal terms, it is used for dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), metrorrhagia (too much menstruation) and amenorrhea (too little, or no, menstruation). Dong quai is also often recommended during pregnancy to ease delivery, reduce pain and discomfort and eliminate complications as much as possible. Most of the actions of dong quai depend on the presence of coumarins, phytosterols, polysaccharides, and flavonoids.' 'Dong quai contains estrogenic substances that may exert some regulating effect on estrogen levels and on estrogenic biological mechanisms. They seem to enhance estrogenic effects when estrogen levels are too low, and compete when levels are too high. This would be in keeping with the idea of a menstrual tonic. It is doubtful if dong quai has any direct estrogenic effects.' Red Raspberry is a rich source of vitamins A, B complex, C, and E, as well as the minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. These nutrients make it an excellent prevention and treatment for anemia and leg cramps, as well as a beneficial remedy for the reduction of morning sickness. The high mineral content also assists in the production of breast milk. The uterine toning has assists contractions and checks any hemorrhage during labour. As a tannin-rich astringent it is useful for diarrhea, leucorrhea and other loose conditions. Also used for easing of mouth problems such as mouth ulcers, bleeding gums and inflammations. As a gargle it will help sore throats. Black Cohosh has a long history of use among Native Americans, primarily for female needs, but also for cold and flu, indigestion, hysteria and pain. Black Cohosh has been shown in numerous studies to be both safe and effective, and is widely used in Europe and the US to relieve the symptoms commonly associated with PMS and menopause (particularly hot flashes, menstrual cramps, changes to the vaginal lining and even depression). The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends black cohosh for 'Premenstrual discomfort, dysmenorrhea or climacteric [menopausal] neurovegetative ailments.' 'Side Effects: Occasionally, gastric discomfort.' 'Daily dosage: Extracts with alcohol 40 - 60 percent (v/v) corresponding to 40 mg of drug. Mode of Administration: Galenical preparations for internal use. Duration of Administration: Not longer than 6 months. Actions: Estrogen-like action; Luteinizing hormone suppression; Binding to estrogen receptors.' Hot flashes are hormonal imbalances caused during menopause when the signals between the ovaries and pituitary gland diminish. This decreases estrogen production and increases the production of luteinizing hormone (LH). A recent German clinical study demonstrated that an extract of black cohosh decreases LH secretions in menopausal women – but produces no hormonal changes. The studies, therefore, support the usefulness of black cohosh for symptomatic relief from hot flashes, but not as a substitute for hormone replacement therapy. The extract of this plant is sold in great quantities in the US and Europe under the trade name Remifemin. Results of tests comparing Remifemin to combination treatment with estrogens and diazepam have shown treatment with Remifemin to be superior as measured by the Kupperman Menopausal Index. Other tests such as the Self-evaluation For Depression Scale, the Hamilton Anxiety Inventory, and the Clinical Global Impression Scale--all recognized and trusted measures of clinical efficacy--have been used in studies evaluating the performance of Black Cohosh extract. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Chaste tree fruit for 'Irregularities of the menstrual cycle. Premenstrual complaints. Mastodynia [breast pain].' 'Daily dosage: aqueous-alcoholic extracts corresponding to 30 - 40 mg of the drug. Mode of Administration: Aqueous-alcoholic extracts (50 - 70 percent v/v) from the crushed fruits taken as liquid or dry extract.' Chaste tree fruit contains iridoid glycosides, flavonoids, and terpenoids. Clinical trials have shown significant reduction of the whole range of PMS symptoms resulting from prolonged use of Chaste tree berry extract, from irritability and headaches to cramping and breast pain. Other trials have shown genuine effectiveness for women suffering from infertility and irregular periods. Grieve's calssic 'A Modern Herbal': '...the berries somewhat like peppercorns, dark purple, halfcovered by their sage-green calyxes, yellowish within, hard, having an aromatic odour; taste warm, peculiar. The seeds were once held in repute for securing chastity, and the Athenian matrons in the sacred rites of Ceres used to string their couches with the leaves.' 'The fresh ripe berries are pounded to a pulp and used in the form of a tincture for the relief of paralysis, pains in the limbs, weakness, etc.' Chaste Tree Berries are ancient in European tradition for hemorrhage following childbirth and menstrual regulation, discussed at length by Hippocrates, Dioscorides and Theophrastus. Contemporary research supports these ancient physicians, showing that the whole fruit is medicinally active. Vitex causes the pituitary gland to produce luteinizing hormone. This increases progesterone production and helps regulate a woman's cycle, re-establishing the normal balance between estrogen and progesterone. The underproduction of progesterone can cause PMS and other related problems. This glandular balancing can be profoundly helpful during menopause. Vitex also keeps prolactin secretion in check. The ability to decrease mildly elevated prolactin levels may benefit some infertile women as well as some women with premenstrual syndrome. A double-blind study, confirming other studies, showed Vitex to be more effective than vitamin B6 in controlling PMS symptoms. This is not a fast acting remedy, and will not give immediate symptomatic relief. It is safe to use over long period.
