Tyrosine, found in many foods, is a 'nonessential' amino acid (protein building block), in that the body itself can also manufacture tyrosine from the amino acid phenylalanine. From this the body synthesizes several neurotransmitters, including L-dopa, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. These can have an important effect on depression and other mood disorders. Supplementation with both tyrosine and phenylalanine often leads to alertness, arousal and stress relief. Phenylalanine and tyrosine are sometimes prescribed as antidepressants, usually in combination with other nutrients and herbs that have mood elevating and stress-relieving properties.
